A visit to border town Serikin

With the south of Sarawak state being particularly narrow, it borders Indonesia in a nearer vicinity compared to the central or northern regions. One particular border town which is popular among locals and tourists is Serikin. It is tiny Bidayuh town located about 80km from Kuching, the capital of Sarawak.

What is so special about Serikin?

Serikin is well-known for its weekend market where various goods from Indonesia are sold in relatively cheaper prices compared to standard market rates. The stalls are lined up along both sides of a narrow street.

There are so many vibrant, colourful items being displayed. The goods sold range from perishable ones such as food and fruit, to carpets, rattan produce and even kitchen equipment such as ovens and woks.

Rugs and carpets are brought in from the neighbouring Indonesia. They have distinct patterns. It is said that these items are generally cheaper than market prices in Kuching, hence local Kuchingnites travel all the way to Serikin to acquire some for their homes.

Rattan produce is definitely another sight worth having. Various products made using rattan (or what the locals call 'rotan') are being sold in the middle part of the market. Chairs, swings, food covers, floor mats are just some of the ones you can name.

Another worth-it item to nab is dried shrimps. Chinese call it "hay bee" and they can be bargained to something like RM38 per kilo. Again, that's a good deal not to miss.

At the end, the stalls are more 'market-style' where vegetables and fruit are being sold. A quick check revealed that most items are cheaper and even half the general market prices.

This is the type of Indonesian gas ovens sold at the market. Local Sarawakians take the opportunity to buy some of them for baking.

The verdict on Serikin?

It is definitely a place to visit, if you have never been there. But driving the narrow roads, which, by the way, may take up two hours during the day, would not be that worth it if you just want to get cheaper dried shrimps or fish maw. That said, if there is a group of you who want to venture and do some group activity sight-seeing, this could be a good idea. You can even drop by Fairy Cave or Wind Cave before or after your visit to Serikin. They are just a stone's throw away.

My tip?

If you have to choose between Saturday or Sunday, do choose the later. It is known that these sellers have to pack up by Sunday so they are more willing to part with less.
