Travel and adventure: India Street, Kuching

India Street is an iconic pedestrian-only street in Kuching, situated in the heart of the old town area. According to the plaque, this street got its name from the many Indian shops occupying the area. Originally named Kling Street in the 1850s, the third White Rajah of Sarawak, Charles Vyner Brooke renamed it India Street in 1928. It was only in 1992 that this street finally was closed to the vehicles and became the now famous pedestrian street.

Accessibility to the street is easy. If you're driving, a good spot to park would be at Plaza Merdeka's basement parking. Exit the mall, and India Street is just round the corner.

There are many colourful shops lining up the famous street. Although one would not commonly see Indians operating the shop these days, its name still stuck. It is now a multi-cultural street with plenty of items on display. The pedestrian walkway is also covered with a hexagonal-patterned roof to shelter shoppers and shopkeepers from the sometimes rainy days.

What could one find along India Street?

Clothes, clothings and footwear are among those sold by the shops, mostly targeted at tourists. Clothings featuring the batik designs are among some of the popular items. They come in colourful patterns. One should always bargain to get the best buy.

Colourful drinks such as teh tarik, calamansi, milo and sugar cane are amoong some of the choices. Fried food and banana fritters also make good finger food for those who want to get a quick bite.
