Netflix binge: Bitter Daisies

Another of my latest Netflix binges is a six-episode mini series Galician (I watched the whole series thinking it was Spanish!) called Bitter Daisies. So instead of training my ears to Spanish, I ended up with a language which sounded more like Portuguese language instead.

The original title, O Sabor Das Margaridas translates directly as "the taste of daisies". The title does not seem to tie in during the initial part of the series as there was no symbolism of daisies throughout. The choice of the title does make sense after getting deeper into the story line.

This series explores many thematic areas. It depicts a quiet town in northern Spain where most people know each other. But deep down in the town, there are many secrets and lies which are hidden. It reflects on how people usually appear normal but deep down inside, they might be hiding some ugly parts of themselves.

Another thematic exploration in this mini-series was on trust within a family, or mainly between couples. I find it compelling because family dynamics sometimes are easily affected by just a grain of mistrust or misunderstanding. This series carefully weaved out many of these issues in direct or indirect manner altogether.

I shall not serve any spoilers here. But expect not just one, but a few twists at the end.
